View Full Version : Flashlight mod for Doom 3

Well the mod community is already working on improving Doom 3. I've seen some complaints about having to change between gun and flashlight in the game. Someone has created the "duct tape" mod in which the flashlight is taped to the gun.
Thanks to Blues News for the details which can be found here. (http://ducttape.glenmurphy.com/)

I thought it was meant to add to the tension?

Hmm, it's interesting, I thought that I would have wanted the game more with such a feature already in it. But now that I see it in-game, it really takes away a lot of the atmosphere that Doom 3 seems to possess. I wonder if anyone else had the same feeling?

I just bought the game as I couldn't resist the lure of a new ID shooter and most everybody has good things to say about it despite the apparently small complaints.

I will run through as much of it as I can the way it was mean to be played and then use one of the mod's and see what I prefer I guess.

So now I will be playing Far Cry and Doom 3 on my PC and Morrowind:GOTY and Fallout 2 will once again take a backseat I guess...ugh, I am so ADD.

There is also a way to adjust the gamma in the game through the console, lighting up the halls. You can set it bright enough that you would never have to use the flashlight if it's that big of a deal, although that would ruin the tension and the game IMO.

At the console (Ctl+Alt+~) type "r_gamma X.X" (no quotes). The default value is 1 and it can be set between 1 and 3. You may also have to tweak your brightness after this too.

Well the flashlight "problem" so far was overstated by myself after playing the first level or so, apparently. Simply re-mapping it to the right mouse button works well enough and doesn't slow the game down. I am having problems with lag when areas load after opening doors etc..., seems memory related, Far Cry did the same thing until it was patched. More RAM wouldn't hurt for me either. Otherwise it plays great.

The Sentry mod sounds kinda cool though, I like those things. :)

Supa do you have an ATI card? If so did you get that 4.9 beta patch? That helped me out a lot.

I simply use F to switch between flashlight and last weapon. But the game is getting so repedative that I can predict where all the monsters are anyway and don't need a flash light :p:

Actually there's only a few places dark enough that I've had to use it so far - the sound is so good I can hear them when need be most of the time. Re-booting my PC helped (fragmented system/video memory or a memory leak in the game?) and turning the quality down to medium got rid of the hiccups - but I hate playing it on that setting. So now I will try it on high again.

I have a 9800 128MB Pro btw. I'm using the 4.7 drivers I believe and the ATI Tray Tool utility.

I don't know where it is, but someone has modded the flashlight to look like a "Hello, Kitty". Now, when is someone gonna mod it to Barney Doome 3!

Uhm...is there a way to post secret text, like [SPOILER] in some of the other boards/forums? I'll respond to this thread with an update if I can post some secret text so that nobody can read it unless they want to...just putting it lower doesn't work now that people are running 1600x1200 desktops.

Without the secret text all I can say is that I think it's a cheat, and it's also useless. By setting just a few cvars you can have unlimited ammo and just shoot the BFG around every corner. Heck, I think there's a cvar so that nomonsters is set to 1 and you can just stroll through the maps with your hands in your pants.

God, I'm in hell: would you like me to pick something up for you while I'm down here?

You can change your font color to white, but that is about it. I know what you mean though, AVS Forum has it.

OK, I'll try making the font white. They should be able to view it by highlighting it. Anyway, here's why I think the flashlight mod is a cheat and useless:

When you get to Delta Labs level 2 Specimen Transport, and into levels 3 & 4 the walls are coated with charcoal...which means illuminating them doesn't do any good. When you are teleported to Hell, at least at hard difficulty, you arrive without the flashlight (nor anything else for that matter), and there is no flashlight to be found...at least I could not find one and I'm at Boss4 of the game (Boss1 of Hell), though I suspect that since I did not pick up the machine gun then perhaps the flashlight as well is hidden somewhere; but, in at least the first part of Hell the flashlight does not even exist. I'm not sure if the mod forces that entity to exist or not, but even so...again, Hell is nothing but charcoal and lava and illuminating them doesn't do any good. Well...I do have spectral lighting off so maybe the walls would be more visible.

I hope the secret text above can not be read unless you highlight it with the mouse

It worked, I am just getting to the Delta Labs also - so I didn't read the above. The flashlight I'm fine with so far, not nearly as much of a hinderance as it was made out to be.

The ammo levels are sparse at times but almost perfectly balanced to make you stop and think before charging into everything - and it adds suspense (and makes you use those inconvenient grenades at times - I think i have about 30 of them on me still).

Looks like Donjo wants to become a forum host instead of moderator.
