View Full Version : First ever 3DGFF?

Anyone interested? After all the talk regarding Gaim falling off ladders, I realized it has been a while since we had a good old frag fest.
For those of you who don't know, this originated with the PCGOFF meaning PC gamers oasis frag fest, which then transformed into a GMvFF, and now hopefully into a 3DGFF. I think you can figure out the acronyms :p:
So discuss here, and maybe we can settle on a game to play. (maybe we should play quake 1 so gaim can still play on his 28.8k :p:

BTW I put this in general gaming because I am open to console games too.

Hey, I am interested. I have BF1942 and UT2004, although I can't provide a server for the latter anymore. I'd have to reinstall it too, I uninstalled it because I was getting way too pissed everytime I lost in DM.
I don't have Call of Duty anymore, sold it :(:

Sounds like a cool idea, I'll play anything

BTW who can host?
I have plenty of servers but my connection isnt that good :(: Hopefully zedd can host, he has a decent upload speed.
Or maybe one of these new members is sitting on a T1 or better

Doom 3 Tournament mode? Let everyone line up and each takes on the current chanpion. The winner stays until he is defeated.

Ehh with that game's netcode you better hope someone has a good connection to host.

Sweet! Mr. N's COD server is what brought me to Gamers Multiverse to begin with. UT 2004 would be loverly!! :):

I'd gladly play BF1942, Call of Duty, or RTCW:ET. The last has stronger appeal to me, because anyone can go download it without any cost. Medal of Honor used to be tons of fun back in the day, too.

Oh, and I'll play RTCW:ET too!

I would prefer UT2k4 or CoD. I might stress test tonight to see how many people I can take since I already have dedicated unix servers set up.

If UT2004 is chosen, can we do DM?

Unfortunately I don't foresee an opportunity to join in on the action for a while. I seem to recall Gotanypop and Nova both have some association to an online community, so if you guys want to plug your communities, feel free to do that here. There is no official 3DG game server (yet  ) at this time so there is no conflict of interest problem here.
I am hoping sometime down the road this winter, perhaps around holiday time that I might look into another game server. I don't want to say much about it right now because I have some ideas which I haven't discussed with others yet.

Well, I used to hang out with the GZGL crowd, but since {HHS} died (it died when we dropped UT99, we should never have moved to UT2004), I don't really talk to them anymore, so I can't set up anything :(:

UT2004 wouldn't be my first choice but I have it. I'm in if that's what everyone else wants and the timing is right. This weekend wouldn't work for me. Relatives visiting. I have a good chunk of the most recent popular shooters except Halo. No interest in Halo for the PC.

The group that Mr N is referring to is all but defunct. Nobody would pony up for servers except for me and one other guy. CHEAP BASTARDS. Same story has been told again and again in the history of online gaming clans I suppose.

I'm going to be working almost every evening this week, so it will be hard for me.
I HATE this job. It was my last choice. I'm quitting in 1-2 weeks anyways...

So what exactly would we need to setup an official 3DG server?

Do you mean official in long terms, or just for a day or so?
For the most problem the only thing that we lack is a connection with a fast upload speed. I have tons of extra computers at my house (all pretty fast) that could host a game fine on a LAN, but the cable companies really give you the shaft when it comes to upload speeds.
I am sure 3dgamers has some sort of high speed connection (or maybe a deal hooked up with whoever hosts your servers) that we could use, right kapi?

Basically you need a fast pc with a lot of memory. Minimum 1 gig of memory, preferably more. Probably running Linux. Next is a T1 line for the server. Higher than T1 would be preferred, but T1 would work. It all depends on the game and how many players you want to allow at once. Finally you'll probably want to designate a few players as in game "managers". Folks who have the ability to kick out rude players and that kind of stuff.
An official 3D Gamers game server would be really great. I rented a game server last year during the holidays and a number of us had some great fun with it. We played Call of Duty when it first came out and later went with Return to Castle Wolfenstein Enemy Territory because it is a free game and folks didn't even have to purchase a game to play. I reserved 6 spots as password protected member slots and left the rest open so the server remained active, yet community members could join in the action at any time and the server would not be filled with non members all the time. Members could join in on the action at any time provided they knew the password.

Herr N, you don't need that beefy of a server unless you are doing like 32 person UT2k4 or 64 person BF:V or something. Servers with 2.4 P4's and 512mb of ram will often run multiple 16 person games. My server at my house is a dual 2000+ with a gig of ram, I sure wish I could max it out some day on something other than folding :(. I do plan on bringing it to million man lan 4 next year and hosting a ton of games. Heck I may go all out and bring 3 or 4 computers and game on my laptop.

And what of games like Far Cry and Doom 3 ??
I don't know how their net code is, since I haven't had the chance to even try it on my 56K connection. But just the base games are fairly heavy on system resources.
If you rent a game server and find it to be of inadequate power, then you can usually just upgrade it for a few more $. But if you're thinking of buying one for long-term use that will be more cost effective, then you might as well get something with some power under the hood to save on multiple upgrading costs.

I know the old rule of thumb used to be 10mb and 30mhz per player on the server. This may have changed a little since I heard that last, but probably pretty close. After all, all the server is doing is saying "Hey Gaim is here" then "Hey Mr. N is here" then "Hey Mr. N had a headshot on Gaim".

Having players wouldn't hurt either.

I thought it was more like "Hey, Gaim fell off a ladder......Hey Gaim fell off a ladder.........Hey Gaim was beat down by Mr. N after he fell off a ladder..."

We could setup a server at one of our data centers. I guess it would be cool if we could host 2 or 3 different types of games on it.
If we were to do this it would need most likly to run (linux).
We have space in our data centers for the hardware and bandwidth shouldn't be a problem either.
So I guess the next step is to see if Mr. N is volunteering for the game admin position ;-)

The best option would be to give all the forum mods abilities to ban people from ther servers, and moderate the server just like we do here. Then depending on if you want to have the guy that works on your data center manage your servers or not, you could pick someone else to help manage the server's config files for the different games, and be in charge of getting new maps, etc. But we can talk about that later....

I suppose I could swing that.
Likely what would be in order would be me having access to the game config files probably via ftp so I could make tweaks and preference changes in the game, the ability to restart the game or server if need be and assign backup hosts to take care of trouble makers who happen to jump in on a game when I'm not around.
It's been almost a year since I was an admin for a game server so I'll probably have to read up a little on a few things. Once a game is decided I'll start reviewing the console commands and stuff.
I don't know if you can host more than one game on one server. It would likely take one server for each game. I guess we need to discuss a preference in which game or games. Keep in mind we'll never be able to have it so that everyone agrees on which game....at least I recall last time that was the way it was.
Feel free to chime in with game choices. I still have fond memories of RTCW: ET. It's a free game available to anyone. There's a ton of mods out there and it doesn't take a high end pc to run.

I dont mind helping Tim out :D:
We could load up RTCW: ET and add some community maps in as well
And if a server has some good hardware, we could have 2 or 3 games on it easy =]

I would be willing to make a donation if needed in order to get something like this up and running. I had tons of fun back when Mr. N had his server going, and when we used to have a game every couple weeks. Good times.

seeing how I've had my job for 2 weeks now I just got my first paycheck, so I'm thinkong about cashing that(147$) with my cash on hand(80$) then buying some games(?$) and a dvd drive(34$) so I could get in on pretty much any game we play. I'm sorta against doom 3 and farcry because the farcry demo sucked on my computer and doom 3 is newer so it would cost a lot.

Well Doom 3 and Farcry multiplayer modes have been deemed sucky by many so I doubt that we would play either of them (atleast I hope not).
