View Full Version : Awful lag in Painkiller

Hey everyone. I was itching for a new game and I thought I'd purchase Painkiller yesterday at Best Buy. It was between that and Sacred. I chose Painkiller and now I'm regretting the choice.
I'm getting periods of horrible lag. The game seems to play fine for stretches and then it just freezes for seconds at a time. The music continues to play and the sound effects sometimes will repeat endlessly.
I feel like I really goofed by purchasing it at Best Buy, though. I won't be able to return this game and I'm feeling like I should have got it somewhere else where the return policy is better.
My system is a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz with 512MB RAM. I have a nVidia GForce 4 ti 4400. I've updated all my drivers and patched the game to 1.3.1.
I'm still getting the lag in the game.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally, I'd like to just exchange the game, but I don't have high hopes with Best Buy. I may try to call them up and talk them through it. I am a loyal customer of that particular store, having purchased loads of software, DVDs, music, hardware and TVs from that particular branch. Maybe that's still worth something.
Thanks for the help!
Dan

Well, I called a manager and was able to do an even exchange on it. The manager didn't give me any problem at all and was very happy to help me out.
This has happened to me in the past at Best Buy and I've been unable to return a game that didn't work. It's nice to know that when you act professionally, they listen to you and act accordingly.
I purchased the DVD version of Unreal Tournament 2004.
It's a shame about Painkiller, since I would have liked to play it, but the lag was making it pretty difficult to do so.
Thanks,
Dan

Good deal, it is a pity that they have to do stuff like that because of all the people that will copy the game to their hard drive, steal the key, then return.

That's too bad, Dan. I played through it with the 1.2 patch without too many problems, but when I got the 1.3 patch and tried replaying it; I couldn't. It wouldn't load saved games. I guess the 1.3.1 patch was supposed to cure that, but I didn't fool with it.
I've got a 2.6gig processor, 1gig of memory, and a 5900XT; and I did notice a little lag when things got busy, so maybe your video card and memory are a slight bottleneck, but it seems like it should have played OK. It was entertaining, and I did replay it; but you're not missing anything important. Enjoy UT2004. I still haven't gotten it, yet, so let me know how you like it. I'm playing The Suffering, now, and its a good time-killer until Doom III arrives; but, again, its nothing special. Have you played Far Cry? Edward.

I haven't played Far Cry and it was one of the choices. I've heard such good things about UT2004, though and I loved the demo.
Maybe I'll get Painkiller sometime in the future, since I did think it was pretty cool (what I saw of it).
UT2004 is pretty fast and furious. I don't have a lot of time to play it today, but I'm enjoying it so far. It was great to install it all from one DVD.

I never really had any problems with PK but it does push your video card to the limits, and I have a 9800 Pro 128MB...the engine is super impressive and I hope someone else uses it for a new game eventually other than a straight ahead shooter.
I un-installed ut2k4 due to the space it took up on my HDD and almost re-installed it last night for kicks but have too many other games I want to play/finish currently, but it was quite fun while I did play it - on or offline.

Well, I'll just add my two cents to all you've probably heard about Far Cry. It was, by far, the best shooter I've played in a while for many reasons; so I highly recommend it. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the immersive, tropical paradise, setting; but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was pretty and challenging, and driving the boats and flying the hang-glider were delightful. Its one of those games where you want to just wander around and take in the scenery from time to time. I played it twice, like I usually do with all my games, but I'll bet I go through it, again, sooner or later. Its that good. Edward.

Yep, I'll agree with Edward...when you want an example of a game that gets it right...Far Cry gets it right.
Great game.
