I know this game is older than dirt, but I read about it on here and had to try it. It great fun, but I have come upon a part that I cannot get past. I am probably about halfway through the game, I have been playing for a long time but I hear it is a long game. I am on a boat that I took a hang glider to get to. I used the explosives to blow up the boat and I run to the other side of the boat so the explosion doesn't kill me. Then the main bad guy comes on his helicopter with a machine gun that kills me in about 5 seconds. I try to hit him with the rocket launcher but it doesn't seem to do anything. I have hit him with as many as 6 rockets before he kills me and he still doesn't go down. THe gun only holds 14 rockets. What am I missing?

Just need to keep hitting him with rockets, taking care to make those shots between hails of gunfire. (Use cover.)
Be sure not to miss and waste ammo.
Not even half-way through btw.

Do I have to hit him with all of my rockets?

It takes a lot to do it. Just keep shooting. I had a very hard time with that part because I only had 4 or 5 rockets. It's very hard but it can be done. I believe I finally beat it by going to the bridge of the ship and running back and forth from one side to the other. It's been a looong time since I played though. Great game. It's worth going all the way through.

I remember that battle. Swim to the shore, or island, I can't remember, and use the palm tree for cover. Just keep firing and ducking back behind the tree, and you'll damage him enough for him to fly away after a while. Let us know how you do. Edward.

The rocket launcher has a red spot over the target, right? That would mean you have a "homing" feature on where the rocket goes.. use the intent of placing the rocket where the enemy will be.. to compensate for time/distance. Same as when skeet-shooting or hunting.. you "lead" the shot!
Go back to the original Half-Life.. when you are in the mountain cave and find the rocket launcher.. you won't hit anything unless you "home" the target!

Let me reiterate. Do not stay on the boat! Arm the explosives and jump off the back of the boat and swim to the shore. The palm tree offers perfect cover, and you can keep it between you and the helicopter; popping out between machine gun blasts to shoot at the gunner. The helicopter will just be moving slowly back and forth, so just aim directly at the gunner. No "lead" is needed.
I'm jealous that you are playing this game for the first time. It's one of the best games I've ever played, although it's not easy. I think I played through it three times, and it was serious fun every time. Have fun. Edward.

Well what I did was I stayed on the boat and ran into the pilot house near the rear of the boat. You have a while before the boat sinks and you can pummel him with rockets from relative safety. Wait for him to pause firing before ducking out of cover to launch a rocket. There is also extra rocket ammo in the pilot house. This strategy worked for me on challenging so it may work for you. If you are out in the open he will nearly insta-kill you with the machine gun on the copter.
I love the many options and openness you have with picking a tactic in this game, it really is fantastic.

The palm tree on the shore is the ticket to your success if it is the same part of the game we are thinking of. They'll fly in close enough to you, for you to hit 'em, and you can avoid their fire behind the tree.
