This from the HardOCP web site:
FarCry 1.2 Patch Issues:
Since posting the FarCry 1.2 patch yesterday I have received a ton of e-mail from ATi video card owners saying that FarCry, once patched, is booting them back to the desktop in both mutli-player and single player games. I installed the patch myself on both an ATi 9800XT box and a GFFX 5950Ultra box and sure enough my ATi box crashes to the desktop randomly. I called tech support and was told this:

We have received an alarming number of complaints from ATi card owners that are experiencing crashes after installing the 1.2 patch. The issue is being looked into. At this time we suggest re-installing your game without the 1.2 patch.

I have the patch, but haven't installed yet so I can't confirm the issue with my 9800 pro.

I visited the Ubisoft/Farcry forums and there are a ton of posts from people having problems with the patch. Some of the other issues I briefly saw:
No sound, sound no longer works.
Save games lost, have to start over.
Various crash errors, load file errors.

At this point I would have to advise folks to wait on this one.

ouch !!

I'm glad this sort of thing doesn't happen too often with game patches.

Thanks for the info, Mr.N !!

Well I went ahead and installed the patch and at least on my system there are no problems to report. Everything works and no crashes, sound issues and even my save games from version 1.1 load up just fine. My system specs are in my profile.

Wow! You know, in my limited five-year gaming experience, I've grown to trust patches, too; but I recently had the same experience with the second patch for PainKiller. I went from playing with a few bugs, to not being able to play, at all. I really didn't appreciate reinstalling and starting from scratch, again. Pissed me off, actually.

Its what the hell is wrong with this country, and the world; quality plays second fiddle to fast bucks, everyone is in a hurry, and all the standards of everything good and right, suffers. Honest mistakes are one thing, but when they become common, and even expected, then something is bad-wrong with the picture. I can't even expect the correct change from Taco Bell's drive-thru, anymore. Seriously, they are wrong as often as they are right; and whether they are trying to scam a little change on the side, or making "honest mistakes," doesn't matter. Like the bad patches, its just one more little blip on the radar screen of plummeting quality of everything.

Sorry about my foul mood, tonight. It ain't all that bad, and gogamer.com put a smile on my face with a free lollipop the other day; but sometimes I yearn for a younger, more innocent, time of my life when I could believe that most of us knew right from wrong, and the almighty dollar was a result of quality, not a substitute. Things sure seem more scary, these days.

Thanks for the tip, Tim. I don't want the damned patch, anyway; but I was taken with a short rant spell, you got the lucky response. Heh, heh. I feel better now. Edward.

No problem, I guess. You deal with it, and keep your ass covered; but you can't help but wish sometimes that we

No offence to ATI owners but this is why I prefer NVidia based cards.

The problem lies with the patch devs, not the card manufacturers. I like ATI cards (at this moment), because they perform a little better than comparable nVidia cards. Also, game and graphic software devs have to do a lot more work to make their games compatible with nVidia's FX cards than any of the ATI cards.

A little history of what's been going on.

Now, the newest nVidia cards and tailor-made drivers may be minimizing the problems. After all, in the latest real world benchmarks the top nVidia and ATI cards are almost dead equal.

I wasn't infering that Nvidia cards were superior, just that over time I've seen that ATI has had more issues than Nvidia.
