in this thread at Beyond3D, "someone" suggests that we may not yet have seen the 6800 Ultra's true form...

Regarding the NV40 - I think you're all forgetting this is A1 silicon which has been available for sometime now. A2 silicon was available at review time, but NVIDIA decided against it.

There's a reason the clockspeeds suddenly went from 475Mhz to 400Mhz - the final ones will be at or over 475Mhz, but NVIDIA's in their "let's make ATI more confident in themselves than they should be" mood.

If anything, this generation will probably be remembered by the gazillions of tricks & traps each company is preparing for its arch-nemesis... But I'd still be inclined to say the R420 will win this war for several reasons. We'll see though.

Soon all we'll see on the official release is a bunch of photos of nVidia or ATI staff giving the finger to their rival.

Ain't competition like this fun?

We haven't had it like this in a long time.

nVidia dominated the market with their GeForce 3 & 4 cards. Bolstered by their superior drivers.

Then DX9 came out and the game changed. Suddenly game devs had to work twice as hard programming their games to get nVidia's FX series to be just 'fair' in quality. Combined with nVidia essentially making new drivers specifically designed to work with a particularly popular game.

ATi quickly won the market and the gamers' attentions with its Radeon DX9 series of cards. Finally ATi was also pumping out high-quality drivers at a faster rate. So the support was there too.

As competition heats up, so will the cards.... literally !!

nVidia caught some flak over their leaf-blower cooling system when the high-end FX cards first came out. Taking up two slots and adding a noticeable level of DBs isn't enduring to some people, who are using all of their board's slots.

I'm guessing that there's been a lot of talk between nVidia, ATi and most mother board designers/manufacturers. If only those MB folks would be so kind as to widen the space between slots, then future vid cards would technically only have to occupy one slot.

ATi is reporting (http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/ir/2004/atiq204.pdf) revenues of $463.3 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2004, ending February 29. That's a 47.8% increase relative to the second quarter of fiscal 2003. Gross margin rose to 34.8% - almost six percentage points higher than the same quarter a year ago. Net income per share was $0.19 for the quarter compared to a loss of $0.04 per share last year. ATi's cash position increased $88.5 million during the quarter to $469.5 million as of this Feb 29th.
