View Full Version : Help in identifying game

Hello friends,
Could you give me a hand please?
Few years ago I bought one of those PC games-related magazine with a CD included. Inside I found an interesting playable demo. Lemme tell you some details about it. It's as kind of a turn based strategy game, VERY similar to "Fallout" (realistic buildings, streets, cars, stairs). You are member of a space Marine team or something and the mission in that demo level was disarm bombs all around the block, usually hidden in trash cans and etc, within a time. In the process, this tactical group should engage heavly armed alien(?) gangs. I remember that you could arrange the unit, I mean, you could keep, for example, 4 soldiers waiting in a place and move another two to fight the gangs. They keep contact by radio and, once attacked, they said something like "under attack" an so on. Each team member could be equiped with weapons like M60 machine gun and RPG-7 launchers. You could find weapons and grenades in dead gang members and trash cans. Another detail is that a kind of alien vegetation, in a form of small pulsating tentacle-like tufts, is found everywhere. The Marine team and the gangs have no special armoury-like uniforms. There's another thing. I remember that sometimes I could take down the gangs firing in parked cars next to them. The explosion was enough to kill them.
Any clue what this old game is? Thanks a lot in advance.

I think this is a shot in the dark, but is it Syndicate?
If not, it sounds like a game I would like.

Syndicate didn't have aliens though... Did it?
My interest is piqued as well, anybody know what this one is?

Thanks for your tip, Rob.
I just searched for "Syndicate" screenshots and I can tell you it's not the game I search for. First because it's too old (released in the 90's). My misterious game it's from the 2000's for sure. Second, the unknown game have better renderized scenarios, which resemble "Fallout". I think the main points that could make some difference in this demo level are (1) the hidden time bombs and (2) those "alien" vegetation scattered around the city.

You know, there's been quite a few indie games out of europe that have tried to recapture the feel of games like Syndicate and X-Com, and they're all pretty obscure.
It may be that you'll never find what this game was.

Yes, I'm affraid you are correct.
But you reminded me something.
I think I saw anywhere in the game that it was developed in Europe, MAYBE in Netherlands or something.

Unfortunately not, Adew. The characters of my game have no space suits/armoury (at least not in that demo level) and space vehicles. They look like humans. And the scenario is not futurist/spacial, but city scape, urban. Remember the trash cans where time bombs are usually hidden...

Was it isometric 2d? Was it 3d? 3d characters on 2d environs? What?

Yes, it's isometric.
Imagine this Laser Squad Nemesis, but with human characters and urban scenario where you have to defuse hidden bombs in a time. In that demo level you engage gangs of human-like characters, not monsters. The "Marine" team have no armoured space vehicles. They are foot troops. No laser guns and futuristic weapons, but pistols, AK-47, M16 rifles, M60 machine gun and RPG-7 rocket launchers, grenades.

No, it's not "Incubation", I just checked the screenshots.
Think in something along the lines of "Fallout" PC game.
Again, with human-like characters, urban scenarios (cars, buildings with fire stairs, trash cans, traffic lanes), conventional weapons (auto rifles, machine guns and rocket launchers) and hidden time bombs.

Hmmm, I'm stumped. The only suggestion is going through this list:
http://au.gamespot.com/reviews.html?type=reviews&category=Turn-Based+Strategy&platform=5&mode=all&sort=post_date&dlx_type=all&sortdir=asc
And seeing if anything comes to mind.

The only thing I can promise here is that, if any of you are able to identify this misterious game, I will make a special caricature of him/her as "The Mother/Father of all Gamers".

Since you say that it was very similar to Fallout is it maybe Fallout Tactics (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/fallouttacticsbos/images.html) ?
If not that maybe one of the Jagged Alliance (http://au.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/jaggedalliance2wildfire/images.html) games?

Just checked the links. "Fallout tactics" have characters in some kind of armour vest, so it's out of the list. I think it's more like "Jagged Alliance". Do you know which of them have time bomb defusing missions? Do the Marines make radio contacts saying things like "help, I'm under fire"?
Something more: Dead characters show no blood puddle. If I can remember well, sometimes when I started a new game in that demo level, scenario got darker as in the night or something.

Sorry, I can't help you there. I've never actually played any of the Jagged Alliance games. I just remembered them from the previews I've seen over the years as being in the same style as you describe.

Perhaps trying to recall the issue date of the magazine would help. There may still be archives of the publication, and listings of features/bonuses.
Have played many game types, but the description of this one doesn't raise any flags.
Edit: Just had a thought.. possibly a "Splinter Cell" type demo?

"Splinter Cell" looks too Doom 3 or something.
This game I remember is similar to "Fallout" isometric stuff. I found it in a CD sold along a magazine related to PC games and stuff. I can't say what magazine is, since there are many titles you know...

Reading through your posts again - with the enemies - were they HUMAN, or human-like aliens?
How were they dressed?
Jagged Alliance fits the bill for your troops - as it looks fairly contemporary (non-scifi) for arms/armour and setting, but it was against human troops.

Yeah, Recall and give more informatons if you need the right answer.
In your first post, you said the troops you played was "Space Marine". How is it gonna be space marine with no armor?
Or it's just soilder?
For the enemy, is it Alien or just human? I'm confuse now.
About gameplay, what it look like? I mean it's TBS game, did it have a grit or something to move your troop? Or it's like Fallout which had a point to move your characters?
Try to explain how game play, Interface look like that will help to indentify the game.
And where are you come from? I ask because i think we need to know where you got the magazine. As sno said, if it's kinda indie game from EU, may be you have very low percent to know that game (cause we didn't know it either.)
oh and
Check out Silent Storm and Hammer & Sickle , if you like.

Human like enemies with ordinary dressing I think, but the view is aerial you know. You can't see their faces clearly, but I'm SURE they are human like with no special weapons or armour/vehicles. They are also foot soldiers. Perhaps inhabitants modified by nuclear or alien attack. Another thing, I remember you can choose shooting positions, like laying over and stuff. I think the small tuffs of "alien" pulsing vegetation all over the city is also an important detail.

When I say armour I'm refering to huge metallic futuristic armour, but those "Marines" had flack-jackets. Teams had women too (one or two in each group). Let's say they remind me the space Marine troops of "Aliens 2" (don't forget they are seen at distant, aerial view).
The enemies are also divided in groups, patrolling the block. Foot soldiers armed with conventional weapons (same Marines have) with no laser guns or things like this.
Game play for that initial demo level is, you open the game, choose the soldiers (they are primarily armed with standard weapons, and along the game you can pick others), your team is placed in an urban area with streets, parked cars, buildings (desert city with no civilians), then you and your soldiers will search the block for hidden bombs. You must to deactivate them in 10 or 20 minutes, I can't remember. If you don't, the game is over. I believe there's a (female?) voice on background informing when device is deactivated. While searching for the time bombs, you will step to those gangs and fight them. I remember that you use the mouse for moving the Marines, spoting enemies and aiming your weapons. The bombs can be hidden everywhere, on top of buildings, in trash cans, etc. Once deactivated, they show a kind of green triangle over it when the soldier is kneeling to deactive it. Sometimes, when the soldier will check a suspect site, in kneeling position, instead bombs he will find grenades or ammunition (you see a little window over it informing the items hidden).
I bought that magazine in Brazil and I am almost 100% sure that this game was produced in Europe.

dang, I remember a game that was released just a couple years ago that was quite similar to fallout and it was in a urban area, not sure about the bombs or such though.
It was an indie game and I can't remember the name, but i'm pretty sure we are thinking of the same game :(.

Ok, let's go!
Steel Panthers and War on Folvos are more related to war games, I mean, World War Two and stuff. Our misterious game happens in a realistic urban area somewhere in the future, but with no futuristic scenarios. That's why I said it's more like Fallout.
For what I saw about Task Force and Archangel I can say that, at least the screen shots provided by the site, have no similarities with the game I have in mind.
One thing I must say.
Both Jagged Alliance and Fallout have MANY points in common with our unknown game. Perhaps it was made based in the same engine.

Judging by this screenshot (http://www.master-creating.de/ra/gfx/screens/01.jpg) I can tell you it's not the game I look for, because the cars are too big, I mean, the camera is too close to the scenario. Again, the game is similar, VERY similar, to Fallout.
