Is there any merit to Jack Thompson’s arguments in regards to video game violence?

A. Absolutely not, he’s just seeking attention.

B. Yes, if we do not start minimizing the amount of violence in games we could have a severe issue on our hands.

C. No way, Thompson has yet to provide any relevant facts linking violent behavior to the games.

I am not sure, Jack Thompson's ideas get obscured by his idiocy.

But, most likely it is simply A and C.

I think that games with violence in are doing some harm because they glorify and reward for being violent. But I think that one of the most dangerous things at the moment is all the real life fight, murder, stabbing etc etc videos on the likes of youtube etc. How can anyone justify even wanting to watch these videos, never mind putting them on the net. They are too easy to access and a kid with half a brain (and internet access) could get to them. I think these should be banned before the politicians even think about games!

It is a fact that our culture (both here in the UK and in the US) is becoming more and more violent. There are obviously many reasons for this and our governments need to identify and tackle each and every attribute without being blinkered and zooming in on one aspect.

I think that gaming gets a hard time because it is seen by the governments and press as a past-time for the youth. But as this forum is testament, there are many gamers who are in their 30's and 40's and quite alot who are older.

Violence in todays games has become more graphic and the imagery more realistic, and I do think it can affect some players in a negative way. I have been gaming for 20 years now and have seen the changes in games, both good and bad. Maybe one answer would be to further restrict access to violent games with kids. How this could be done, and done well, I don't know.

Jack Thompson? A, definitely. With a bit of C thrown in for good measure.

The issue itself? C leaning towards B.

There assuredly is too much violence in video games. But some games would not be realistic without some violence, such as war-type games or "space" games which are considered fantasy. For those games that imitate real-life scenarios, the violence level is too high. All too many players wish to emote on those experiences, and this causes our crime rate to rise in many areas (not my opinion). For those who just enjoy the game play without carrying over experiences to real life, it doesn't appear to be a concern.
One first step is for parents to control what their children have access to! Before the age of 18, they are not considered adults.. and should be treated as still in the 'learning' stage!
