What's the most exotic thing you've ever eaten. For me, it's frog legs.

I don't eat much in the way of exotic stuff. Just gross local stuff - like Morcillas (Blood Sausage) :P

Frog legs, snails, goat, ants, ... I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food. If people say it tastes nice, I'll probably try it out.

I even ate ansjovies on a pizza once!

Ughhhhhh! I forgot, I did eat alligator once at a restaurant that served lots of things like turtle, frog legs, etc. It wasn't bad.

I'll try anything once. Blood pudding (similar to DMPR's Morcillas) sliced thin and fried and fried goat throat are scrumpdilyicious! Stuffed and baked beef heart is to die for. Especially the next day when sliced thin and made into sandwhiches.

And of course there's the tasty little delicacy known as turkey castanjas. These little nuggest of goodness are given up by the male half of the species. In plain language, they are more easily discerned as deep fried turkey testicles.

And there's very little that can be found in the fresh seafood section that I haven't yet sampled. Can't think of a thing that swims, floats or crawls along the bottom of the ocean that I don't like.

Weirdest thing I've had is probably alligator. Wasn't too bad actually, tasted like chicken.

When I was in Japan, I had lots of weird stuff to eat. Let's see, there's grilled chicken hearts, crab brains, chicken liver, "Natto" (fermented soybeans) - they're soybeans, which are glazed with a sticky coating kind of like honey, but much stickier, and since they are fermented, they smell really bad. Japanese people really love natto though, so I had to try.

I also had "Poi" in Hawaii, which is just plain disgusting. It's a grey paste, which tastes like........I'm not really sure how to describe it, but it's really bad.

When I was a kid, I had escargots (<--sp?), and frog legs as well. And since I live in Florida, of course I had alligator once; wasn't bad, tastes kind of like chicken only spicier.

'Bout the nastiest thing I'd eaten were the two worms at the bottom of a Dos Gusanos tequillia. And yes, they tasted just like the nasty bugs you think they are.
:p:

I think Jag's got me beat with his turkey stones.

Then again, there's that handful of dirt that my mother swears I ate when I was 2-ish.

I've tried alligator, I liked it!
Hmm, once I tried to eat a lego(was 3-4), it got stuck in my mouth so I never got the full flavor of it

Well, have you ever tried a Peanut Butter & Jellyfish sandwich?

You got me on that one.

I'm assuming there's a little tongue in your cheek somewhere in that response. If not and PB & JF are one of your favorites, you might want to consider signing up for "Fear Factor" as it sounds like a dish you might find on their challenge menu!

I've ate alligator too. Too stringy *bleh*

That reminds me, I ate a earthworm once for 5 bucks. It was just like spaghetti.

EDIT: cow testicles and Turkey Gizzards as well. Can you say disgusting?

I LOVE sushi, it's one of my favorite foods, and I've tried many of the "odder" choices such as anemone, urchin, eel, and many others. I've had 'gator at a local Cajun place, also.

Don't know if i could bring myself to eat bugs, though.

"Do you gamble?"
"Every time I eat out."

Alligator is as adventurous as I've gotten. Stringy is a good word for it. Knuckley is another one.

I read this thread while eating lunch--bad idea. Note to self: Be very suspicious of any food offered by Jag.

Traditionally deep-fried gator (usually) tail meat can be very stringy and bland. But that has more to do with the age / size of the critter, its freshness, whether it was properly tenderized or not and how well it was cooked. I've had it a few times and only once by a true Cajun chef who really knew what he was doing. Like well prepared abalone, it was delicious and tender. Other times, it was like chewing hot, tasteless rubber bands. In the case of the overcooked abalone, hot, tasteless and VERY expensive rubber bands.

Cheers, Terry

I have eaten Octopus once. That is like chewing on a rubberband.

Octopus is lovely - especially baby octopus with a nice marinade and on the BBQ.

Gator is good - as Terry said, when cooked properly.

I also love eating the fishmeat from their cheeks and forehead - if you ever get the chance, eat it. Not much, but it's the most tender meat on the fish. mmm...

Otherwise I've eaten witchety grubs, emu, kangaroo, chicken feet and probably a few other things I can't think of at the moment.

Spicy, fresh, sauteed baby squids stir fried to perfection in a well seasoned wok with piping hot peanut oil and generous doses of essence of concentrated red chili pepper sauce with loads of sticky rice, crunchy oriental veggies and maybe a side of those lovely steamed dumplings stuffed with your choice of fillings and topped with fresh ginger root and other wonderfully heady condiments aplenty sound mighty good to me.

Come to think of it, we have a world class restaurant right here in Houston called Dong Ting that serves up a mouthwatering version as well as the very best birds in jade nest EVER plus savory claypot tenderloin of pork so rich, succulent and ethereal it almost makes you want to cry with pure gustatory joy, not the mention the most delicious little crispy quail delights, unbelievably fresh seafood dishes, soups, appetizers and other culinary marvels of every description and a variety of other taste tempting after dinner treats.

Ooo... I think another trip down there is most definitely in order soon.

Cheers, Terry
