The video game industry seems to delight in pushing the envelope — and the bounds of good taste — with ever-gorier content. That has put it under renewed attack from legislators and activists who claim some titles must be kept out of kids’ hands, though courts have repeatedly granted games First Amendment protections.

Still, the notion that games should be restricted is accepted elsewhere. New Zealand, Brazil, Germany and several other nations have outlawed some games.

In Britain, the makers of the “Resident Evil” series were made to change the color of blood from red to green, while the creators of “Carmageddon” had to make the people you run over in your car look more like zombies than average pedestrians.

I don't want that kind of stuff to happen in America. So I'm all for restricting "mature" games only to people 18-years old or older.

I know that sucks for all of the under-18 people who are mentally fit to play any game without confusing it with reality. But America has ALWAYS been a knee-jerk society. Two kids from an isolated incident tell people that their crime spree was caused by a video game (I suspect they were coached, coerced into those statements), and suddenly we've got politicians and special interest groups demanding that all games with any violence are either heavily restricted or banned outright.

Of cource its not the game that makes these kids to it ..
It is the weak minds of the kids that makes them do it.
Unfortunately it does happen and whatever contributed to there weak breach of normality can and will be labled the cause (expecially by there parents).

So where are some real solutions to these problems ?
It certianly isn't green blood thats for sure.
I think that parents have to play a big role in what there kids play and don't play. And even if they are playing something violent if they are wise enough to handle it and chalk it up to "violent fiction" not "a cool reality" then there parents have done there job. Unfortunately most of the familys out there have no idea how to coach there kids on such subjects half of them don't even believe in spanking.

Resident evil is ok for teens 15 and up I wuld say. And I think that while rating system is cool (i guess) it does absolutely nothing except make the kids want the mature rated games. As a matter of fact its like labeling them so they will know exactly which ones to get right ?

So basicly kids will allways be doing something like that wether it was based on a video game or what Tommy the senior told them what would be cool. As long as they don't know better they wont stop from doing worse. And even then you will get the rouge here and there I think even under the best conditions. But violent tv shows / games can have a negative effect on young teens I guess you just have to face up to that fact wether you like violent games or not.

I think a better idea would be to put a warning label on the kids.

"Warning! Unwillingness to raise properly or become involved in the lives of may result in behavior detrimental to society."

That would be a step in the right direction.

Well if they ever banned games. we could all put our signitures down and petition???

we could get around 2,000,000,000 votes? that sounds about right.

I don't think there is a chance of this happening, we have streangth in numbers?
we are an army, we are zombies with green blood. lets go and shoot something!!!

no i'm only kidding, i'm not being influenced by games. i won't do anything stupid.
NOW HURRY UP AND RELEASE HALF-LIFE 2, I WANNA BLOW UP SOME ZOMBIES!!!

I guess you have to be a gamer to truly understand games.

The next 12 months could see a flurry of new scrutiny of violent games because three controversial franchises are due to release sequels. They include “Doom,” notorious as a favorite of the Columbine killers; “Mortal Kombat,” with its calls for a player to “finish” opponents in myriad gruesome ways; and “Grand Theft Auto,” which exhorted players in its latest iteration to start a Cuban-Haitian race war.

Man, 2 of these 3 games they've been blaming EVERYTHING on for the last 10 years, and GTA for the last 5. The only other examples they seem to think of Manhunt, which no one really played much or liked, and Psi-Ops, which again, I don't know anyone who actually played it (note that it's also made by Midway).

Yes, it is Carmageddon 2 which does...

And there was a patch for that too.

Great patch, up there with the 'special' one for SimCoptor... hehe.

there are alot of reasons why kids do this, games are not the only one, but i will say that they probably do have some effect, though miniscual; some effect. I think games should be restricted, somethings just arent suitable for younger kids. Thats a fact, they should be restricted, but banned, no. People can look at the review for the game and decide for themselves or their children if they should be playing.

Why don´t they ever mention the thousands of kids who do things just as bad or worse that don´t even have video game systems?

Nonsense. There were no wars or murders before games.

cronus makes a good point. that being said, it wasnt kids who were doing it. now kids are doing these types of things more and more.

Its really the parnets fault for not teaching their kids not to kill people even if they see it in game and anyway in England Resident Evil had red blood and I can tell you why ninja gaiden decapitations were left out of the English version if you wnat.

Welcome to what its like here in Aus!

We have no R18+ Rating, so games that are thought of as "adult" are either tonned down or not released. It sucks!
Even GTA was modified so you couldn't pick up prostitutes. From what ive heard, thats how you got health. They need to just release an R rating, but this has been going on here for AGES.

Anybody else notice the irony of this thread's title? Considering that so many videogames have guns in them, that is. :D:
