We're proud to announce that World of Warcraft has achieved a new milestone: 8 million players worldwide! You can view the full press release here (http://www.blizzard.com/press/070111.shtml). This feat would not have been possible without the longstanding support of the World of Warcraft community. Thank you for helping us bring Azeroth to life; we're looking forward to continuing the adventure with you beyond the Dark Portal in just five short days...
P.S. - My Night Elf is 19 now.

Is this CURRENT subscribers or just the amount they have had since the game launched. I didn't see it in the article.....
My bet is that it's a grand total. I know quite a few people who have left WOW. I'm sure there are many others who have also.
But this game keeps selling...................

Blizzard has been quoted on other gaming websites that they have 8 million CURRENT subscribers. Which is about 120m in monthly revenue.

And with that kind of revenue, it's easy to see why you see so many online games!

From my understanding, EverQuest (the original) is the number 2 MMO out right now with 200k subscribers. That just goes to show you how much WoW is dominating.

Well, even though thier server cost's have got to be high with that many players, Blizzard should be able to afford a small country and turn it into a giant server farm, Air Conditioned and everything........... So any idea's a a queue in order to play should have long been forgotten.............

If they're pulling in that much money then they can afford to hire some people and make Starcraft 2, dammit!

That number is going to jump quite significantly next week on the 16th when the expansion is released I'm willing to bet.
And with that kind of revenue, why would they even bother with Starcraft 2? :p:

Good point. I'm worried that Blizzard will just turn into WoW Inc.

My theory is that everyone plays WoW because everyone else is doing it; the peer pressure alone is now sufficient to move units.
It couldn't possibly be that attractive bang-your-head-on-the-wall-like-an-autistic-blonde-chick grind, or the endless FedEx/species extinction missions (boars in the forest!), or the "lets run this raid again for the 500th time; maybe Timmy will get his Pants of Undying +5.", or the worthless PvP, useless crafting, or the mature social atmosphere.
Whoopee.
For the record, Blizzard's numbers are fudged just a tad. Purchasing a game card (not using it), purchasing a game box, or accessing the servers within the last week (when they take the survey) counts you as an "active" subscriber, even if you logged on in a fit of madness for only a few minutes. It's still probably only 7.6 million people.

Partially, I believe so, but not like how in middle school everybody wears the same clothes to look cool and be accepted. WoW is just a quality game to begin with and the fact that it is so accessible (runs well on Windows, Mac, and Linux, along with slow PCs) make it a lot easier for friends to join in. Once you are playing with people you know in real life people end up staying with the game for a lot longer than they would otherwise. I run a guild right now with maybe 20-30 members and with the exception of one or two people the guild is split into two groups that know each other in real life. That is a lot of friends playing together and it is something I haven't experienced in any other game.
Even though there are maybe 7 or 8 people in my guild that I know personally there is still another handful that I know personally who are on my server yet not in my guild and then another handful still that I know personally but they play on a different server.
I've played a lot of multi-player stuff over the years and not even in Counter Strike could I get that many friends together on a regular basis and CS is one of the most popular and most accessible MP games of all time.

Dude, even better, they should just buy a country and turn it into a real-world World of Warcraft.
Like a giant theme-park, but with violence and loot.

Is there another kind of God other than a Holy one? :)
Count my wife and her father in that 8million. But like Donjo was saying, expect a spike in returning players as the expansion pack comes out.
I killed my account for good though. MMORPGs involve too much MM and too little RPG, and since I hate people I'm not a good candidate for them. ;)

I'm pretty sure Final Fantasy XI has more than that.

Yeah, from the link Donjo provided, I am way off. Lineage 2 is number 2 right now with 700k subscribers, still a far cry from WoW but better off then I thought.

I'm going to a midnight EBGames opening for the extra nerd cred to get mine. I still have a copy preordered at my local store but they aren't doing the midnight thing so I'll have to get that one later, I need 2 anyway.

Man, just think how buff you would be if you spent the time working out instead of playing WoW.

WoW is just one among what few hobbies I have. Being child-free by choice, I could easily add "working out" to the list. I simply choose not to.

Well seeing how it only takes 30 minutes of exercise and a proper diet to stay in good shape, I would probably look pretty disgusting if I worked out 4-5 hours a day for almost 2 years. I think I'll take my chances with being normal even if it does mean I miss out on a part in Terminator 4 or a governor's race.

Same! Only problem is that I'll be able to come home and install my two copies on mine and my wife's pc/mac but can't play till she gets up in the morning. Want to share in the experience.
On a side note, has anyone checked out the Caverns of Time yet? That place is one word: AWSOME!

Wow, that is just a massive playerbase! I wonder what blizz is going to do with all that money, hopefully make games! Maybe they should just buy Iraq and help our government out a little.

They've exchanged some of it for gold bars they keep in their basement:
