Well, I know my inner gamer has definitely mellowed out since my teens. I've been checking out a few Doom 3 web sites and browsing screenshots, and I keep feeling unimpressed by the significant technological advances their new graphics engine has introduced. Perhaps it has something to with my having given up on trying to keep up with PC technology. I'm still using a 1.6GHz P4 with 512Mb RDRAM and a GeForceTi 4600 card with SBLive! audio. Considering what I use my computer for now, I don't need anymore horse power than that.
Bottom line, I have about as much interest in playing Doom 3 - nevermind upgrading my computer to play it - as I have for watching grass grow.
EDIT: I'm also the only person in the world who doesn't like Half Life.

In in that same boat. HL just didn't impress me enough to want to finish it. So, I gave it away to one of the forum members. I think it was Robo. It was the collectors edition that came with several of the expansion games included.
I'll reserve my excitement for Doom3 until after I read some reviews from customers who've finished the game. But I sincerely do hope that it's a very good game.

For some reason D3 has never really caught my interest. HL2 has in a bad way, but my overall feeling about Doom is "meh."

You can count me in the whole "couldn't really give a damn about Half Life" crowd. I tried and tried to care about the game, but just couldn't. Most over-rated game in history IMO. That's why HL2 get's the big "meh" from me until I talk to people I trust who played the game, read reliable reviews and possibly play the game myself at a friends place.
To be fair, I'm treating Doom III the same way.

Me three. Totally unimpressed with the single player, though MP was fun for a while.

I am pretty excited about doom though. HL I will just play for the new technology. But when it comes to FPS games, the less I have to think, the better. (hmm probably why I play UT so much)

I liked HL quite a lot, even though I only played it about three years after it had first been released. I really liked the level design and the AI, in those aspects the game is still almost unsurpassed. It also used a very innovative system of scripting to create atmosphere and chalenges in the game.
I can understand why you wouldn't like HL much though, and in part I agree with it too. After HL almost all the games started using scipting, and often did a better job at it than HL, so if you played HL after those games, it must've been a little disappointing after all the hype around it. It definitely was to me, the first time I tried it. But after going through it again I started appreciating it more.
Now back to topic, I feel the same way about D3 as most of the others so far. Not that I think it won't be a good game, I really hope it will be awesome for all the fans. It won't be a game for me however. They took a few design decisions with D3 that simply don't interest me. I've never been interested in horror shooters, I never cared about the Resident Evil games either for example.

I guess there's a silent community of those unimpressed with the original HL. Actually, I thought it had a cool intro and middle, but I eventually got lazy and didn't care to finish it. I stopped playing(and caring) when I was in that alien landscape hopping from floating rock to rock. :wtf: What was that all about?
I have to say, the best RPG/Action game with a brain that I've played to date remains.........."Deus Ex". I haven't yet played the sequel partly because I don't want to be disappointed. I will probably buy Doom 3 when it comes out, though, only because of the graphics and the scary atmosphere. But, by far Deus Ex and Jedi Knight:Dark Forces 2 still rank as my two favorite FPS games of all time(with Deus Ex beating out JK in the intelligence dept.).

Hope it's true. Still looking forward to it, even if my computer may only run it on the low low.

Worst endgame ever.
Especially since I loved (and still love) the rest of it.
Doom 3? I'll buy it cheap. Not because I didn't love the originals when they came out, but because, apart from the graphics, Doom 3 hasn't really hit me.
But at least they've announced the release date! FINALLY!

Yeah, I never really liked Half-Life much either, but always kept silent. You know, it was one of those games that I was *supposed* to like, and if I didn't, I best not tell anyone that. I thought the beginning was soo cool, but once the novelty wore off, it got old fast. When someone told me you got to go to the alien world, I was psyched again, but when I found that it was a bunch of hopping around, I uninstalled the game.
The same seems to have happened to me with DOOM3. If it had come out a year or two ago, I would be jumping for joy. But since then, I've really mellowed down with my gaming habits. I have definitely run out of the time needed to spend hours on a game in a single sitting. I have difficulty getting through single player games unless they're very short, because I often have to put it down for a few weeks or months, and then come back, realizing I've forgotten the storyline. So I've stuck to games that I can pick up and play for a few minutes, or for an hour or so. The last game I bought was Rise of Nations last summer, and I got Knights of the Old Republic for Christmas. I haven't played either of them in months. Never thought I would say this, but I'm just not into games very much anymore, so Doom 3 just doesn't excite me.
If it turns out to be outstanding (which, in all honesty, I doubt), then I might pick it up. Otherwise, I'll let this one pass by.

Gamershell posted a new "blurb" regarding Doom 3 and Quakecon....
"QuakeCon 2004 video game festival and tournament will be held at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas between August 12th and August 15th and will host the first DOOM 3 deathmatch championship ever. The DOOM 3 Inaugural Deathmatch Championship will be a 128 player tournament and registration will begin August 12."
* So it looks like with only a month away....they shouldn't be putting out info like this, unless Doom 3 is a certainty before Aug. 12th.

Well, I'm sure looking forward to both Doom III and Half-Life II. Maybe its because I spent most of my life before even Pong existed that I'm not tiring of this wonderful pastime, yet. Doom II was my first experience with computer games, and; frankly, I was blown away with this new "high." A novel, immersive, gateway into a fantasy world where I could exist and interact; all without drugs, danger, or even much expense. I recognized "fun," big time.
Then I got a system that would play Half-Life, and it was another quantum leap in the whole experience; so I've been hooked ever since. I'll bet I played Half-Life and both the expansions at least four times each before I finally got tired of them. Every time I upgraded my computer, I would play them again. I've seen a lot of people bitch about the outer space levels where you make long, slow, jumps between asteroids; but they were some of my favorites. These are all imaginary worlds we play in, and I'm constantly amazed at how someone has imagined someplace to be; including beauty, motion, danger, and purpose.
There's no way either of these two games will ever measure up to the feelings I got from the originals, but I'm comfortable with that. We're an impatient species; always looking for "new" and "different," and we get bored so easily. We tend to "use things up," and move on to something else. I thinking ageing well teaches us little tricks to make things last, and I want to make the pleasure I get from playing these games to continue; so I work at it. I'm looking forward to these two games with a completly open mind, and I'm going to enjoy them, I'll bet.
Personal preferences insure that different people will like different games, but it sure seems that negative input gets a lot more air time than words of praise or descriptions of pleasure someone might experience from a particular game. Graphics, bugs, glitches, difficulty, etc., don't mean a damned thing to me if the game takes me away and moves me in some way, and I love the challenge of doing well in someone elses' imaginary world. Others must share these feelings, otherwise; why would you play them? Anyway, maybe I'm just old and weird, but I still enjoy the hell out of these things; and I would hate to think I'm having more fun than some of you. Heh, heh. Edward.

I don't think that you are having more than than myself (and I can only speak for myself of course), it's just a matter of different strokes for different folks. In my case, I just couldn't get into Half Life no matter how much I tried. This actually frustrated me because everyone could not stop talking about the game. At the time I felt something was wrong with me, because everyone was telling me that I should love this game.
Eventually I just chalked it up to the fact that not every game is for everyone, no matter how much critical acclaim is thrown on it. Trust me, I have a blast with this hobby and I still do. Right now, I am still having a blast with UT2004, mainly because my wife and I always play together, which makes it more enjoyable and has turned this extremely fun hobby into a legitimate family activity for us something we can do and enjoy together. At this point in time, that is where my gaming preferences are, something that we can play together. If it's an FPS it generally has to be a pure deathmatch type of game (the wife hates games like CS, etc.) or any RTS.

Kind of "Off-Topic",...just a couple questions for Bruenor......
1. How far did you get into HL?...( Just curious)
2. When you say you play UT with the wife....do you play "against" each other?,...or do you "team-up" against the Bots?
If you "team-up" against computer opponents,...have you tried doing the same against the bots in BF1942, or a "Terrorist Hunt" in Raven Shield?
I know that all the "professional" online MP'ers always say that the "bots" are stupid, and that they can beat them blindfolded, and only using their chin to controll the mouse........but I have a blast teaming-up against the AI in BF1942, and trying to hunt down 25 terrorists in Raven Shield, while my friend and I scream tactics across the room.
If you don't own either of these games, you can at least give the demo's a shot, because I know that they both support Co-op LAN, with either 1 or 2 maps.
