Long time no see! I don't know if any of you guys remember me, but it's Warren Towne, back from the ole' days back at Gamespot and on to Gamer's Oasis. I registered and made a few posts back at Gamers Multiverse in the beginning, but quickly faded off into oblivion. But even though I never made my presence known, I regularly lurked at GMv.

Well, just letting you know, (for those who remember me), that I'm still around. This move was a great idea, and hopefully we can get this community to flourish. It's good to see all you guys again!

Great having you with us, Warren !!

I've been wondering how your physics studies have been going, since I'm interested in those same subjects as a hobby.

We'll have to get a few "physics" threads going some time. Compare theories & such. :D:

EDIT: like your screen name.

Going well, going well. I'm just now finishing up the last couple weeks of my sophomore year as an undergrad, dual-majoring in physics and math. It's been hectic, but it's going by fast and I'm enjoying it.

Ya, I should be sticking around more now. I've been MIA for too long; time to get my ass out of lurker-mode. :):

Howdy QN / Warren. It's been a while.

Just out of curiosity, why did you decide to change your screen name since we all knew you as Warren Towne on the old message boards? Matter of fact, why have ANY of you changed your forum moniker?

Cheers, Terry

Well, I stopped using my real name when we decided as a group that we were going to do everything we could to attract attention.

Originally when I used my real name on Gamespot way back when, I received prank phone calls from someone who actually took the time to look my name up in the phone book. Don't want to go through that again, so I stopped using my real name.

On topic, it's great to see you again Warren/QN.

Haha, it's sort of funny - for the longest time, I had wondered what had happened to Alex Leclerc, only to find out yesterday that he has been Nova this whole time. At the same time, I had always thought that Warren Towne had changed his screen name a while ago, and had never left! Now I'm really confused - does anyone care to clarify all the name-changing?

I recall the incident and GM referred to it is an earlier post here on the new forums. Makes sense to use a handle other than your real name if you have any reason to think that some lunatic will actually come after you in "real life".

Personally, I decided long ago to use my real name simply because a fake one did not feel right and I have never had any shame or fear about who I am and what I choose to post on web forums. If I was still living with a wife and/or small kids, I would NOT use my full real name or other personal details, simply because I would never want to put them in jeopardy - no matter how remote the possibility. I might also feel the same way if I was a woman, vunerable to sexual stalking or if I was an underaged kid who might become the target of some anonymous, predatory sleazebag on the net.

All that aside and not that it applies directly to yourself or to Warren / QN, I suppose the greater question is why anyone would change one fake screen name for another fake screen name - especially for use on forums regularly visited by mostly the same people you have known online for a long time. To me, that is just arbitrary and confusing.

Two words, Terry...... individualistic expressionism.

For myself, I've been using this "Gaim Mastr" handle for so many years that it's all anyone on any forum or website knows me by, relatively speaking. It's relative, because I have a different handle for any and all real estate-related activities I do on the net.

I'd actually switched to using my real name on the PCGO website for a couple of months. But that seemed to cause confusion than clarification. Combined with developing the more publicized GMv site, I went back to Gaim Mastr.

Hi Warren, good to see you back :D:

I've stayed with my current alias pretty much since day one. Mostly because I'm too lazy to come up with another one.

Understood GM and I was not questioning anyone's motives for using a moniker instead of their real name. Just questioning why a person would arbitrarily change that fake name to another one, particularly when it would most likely cause confusion amongst the rest of an online community that already knows you well.

As your own experience indicates, that is usually all that results from this sort of arbitrary identity change.

I really thought I had told everybody back on GMv. Ok, I admit I didn't make it very obvious...

I changed names because I ended up having problems with my Alex Leclerc account, I think it just wouldn't let me log in. I should have picked Alex Leclerc here. Gaim, is it possible to change our name with these forums?

Well I changed my name because I never really liked the old one. Probably stick to this one. As far as causing confusion it may be that people don't care so much about that aspect. Being an online community there will always be a certain level of disattachment that people feel towards it, it's not quite real. The confusion of changing names can be as short lived if that person wants it to be, just tell people you've changed your name. New beginning for the person, in their own mind at least.

I'd say people change their username because they can "regardless of any consequences of this action  " and have the freedom to do so. It is definitly a good thing that people can change their username.

Hey Terry, nice to see you again. It's been quite a while. How have things been?

I decided to register with this moniker because it is the one I use at all the other forums I visit. For one, it's easier for me to remember one name, and two, it allows, on the rare occasion, for people to recognize me across fora. I swapped out my real name with this one for some of the reasons that have already been mentioned in this thread.

Glad to see you again, Warren. I wondered where you had gotten to. Too many old friends have dropped out. I'm glad you were here all the time. Keep on posting though. It's more fun than lurking and it let's your friends know you're still here. :):

Edit. Terry, I changed my name for the same reason as the others. I also use the same name on any board I register so my friends know it's me.

I kept this name, because I use it everywhere as my internet identity. I wanted to change it to Flak Monkey, but decided that it was better to be consistent.
