... am I really glad I started cheating so early in the game...

I have encountered **** that, were I playing normally, would've had me bald by now(from ripping my hair out), and turned me into an exceptionally cranky gamer... right now, I'm trapped inside the very depths of Hell, in an enclosed hallway that I cannot find an exit out of, and I'm about to turn NoClip ON.

Um, alright.

I can't say Doom 3 was at all perplexing.

Perhaps your constant cheating borked some of the scripting.

I think the only game I've ever cheated on was Serious Sam in the final boss battle. If I get stuck for a couple of days, I will look at a walkthrough, however. In fact, I got stuck in a funky cube in Prey the other day, and I looked at a walkthrough for the solution. It was really simple, and I felt foolish for not figuring it out, myself; but I understand what you are talking about when it starts getting frustrating.

The pleasure of finally figuring out a tough puzzle, or winning a hard battle, is what playing a game is all about, in my opinion; and, if I cheat, I feel like I'm wasting my money. There does have to be a balance, however, between frustration and fun. Good luck, and try using walkthroughs before you enable cheats. Edward.

Once you kill the two Hellknights, you are then transported to "hell". Your objective is to find the Soul Cube. Once you have killed off the 'guards', then a wall will open and you cross a bridge of floating stones to the next area. [Q-SAVE OFTEN!!] You eventually find yourself on a falling platform, and wind up in a catacomb. Kill off the 'guards' to open the last door to another "rocky" bridge. From here, it should be easy.. until you find the door to enter the final "boss" battle on that level.. the "Guardian". Ensure you collect all the rockets and BFG ammo you can, along the way.. and save them for this battle. You have unlimited stamina in this setup. Then you obtain the Soul Cube after defeating the "Guardian". There will be a clue to help defeat it. Onward.
Have played the game at least 5 times.. and it is fun to "taunt" the enemies into shooting each other, at which point they ignore you and battle to the death of one. Then you are next!
There is an official game guide from Prima that has all the maps, clues, and walk-throughs.
If you enjoyed the original Doom, then a must-have is the "Classic Doom" mod for the Doom 3 engine!!!

Ordinarily, I'd agree, but there was a point, relatively early in the game, where I found myself with only one clip of ammo in my pistol, no ammo for my big guns, no ammo reserves in sight, and the next room I had to enter housed 4 flame-throwing monsters ready to ambush me at once. I spent about two hours trying to come up with a tactic to defeat all of them with just that one clip, and was unsuccessful. At that point I just decided, "I love this game, but I've got a lot better things to do than spend the next week trying to figure this room out, and I sure as hell don't want to have to deal with this kind of **** for the rest of the game." I've been playing in God mode with all guns and ammo ever since.

There does have to be a balance, however, between frustration and fun.

I completely agree. There's one level FEAR that I'm still trying to figure out a way through, but I haven't cheated once it, and I don't intend to start. The game is just far too much fun.

Here's where I'm running into problems. The opening at the end of this area (http://www.nyghtfall.com/doom3/doom3_hell.jpg) leads to a small hallway with two adjacent rooms. Both rooms have runes etched on the walls in brightly glowing orange. When I enter that hallway, this wall seals shut behind me, with no exit in sight even after killing the one flame-thrower that spawns in one of the rooms. There is no door that opens up to another bridge.

If you enjoyed the original Doom, then a must-have is the "Classic Doom" mod for the Doom 3 engine!!!

Got it, and love it. I'm not even cheating in that one. It's just Doom 3 that's been giving me fits.

Doom 3 drove me nuts too, everything looks exactly the same and you get lost easily due to it, if you don't memorize everywhere and every thing you do. This is due to the fact you constantly have to back track and use/find those annoying codes all the time.

It's not a puzzle solving or intellectually challenging issue - it's a bad level and game design issue IMO. Didn't really care for Doom 3 at all, but did like Quake 4.

I just finally made it out of that room, and got schooled in the process.

I basically restarted the level, but only switched on God mode and didn't give myself all weapon/ammo, opting instead to use what's available in the map. As it turned out, there's a stash of ammo in one of the rooms that you have to collect in order to trigger an event that re-opens the room.

Moral Lesson: If you're going to cheat, be prepared for the consequences, lest your actions be unable to trigger scripted events necessary for progression to the next level.

True about "pickups" in a level! If you don't pick up certain ammo or health packs or armor, then you do not complete the 'mission' as you should. Those rooms with the Runes have certain "trip" areas where you pick up ammo or step on a keystone. Once you access the stone bridge, be wary of the ones with symbols on them.. that will conjure up sprits and demons. Step on such stones, and retreat to secure ground!
Once you reach the caverns dig site, you can have fun at the expense of the monsters. Use the racks and scaffolds to duck under, and they become frustrated that they can't get to you! And roll some red barrels down the hill to the entrance, and stack them before the steps.. makes a nice pyre for the sudden group of Hellmonsters that appear once you enter the chamber!
Remember to use the Soul Cube whenever prompted.. it will assist in the final Boss Battle with the "portal" of doom. Otherwise, you will run out of ammo trying to kill the Cyberdemon. Use your rockets, ammo and other weapons on the imps and minons. Learn to run backwards! (And q-save often.)

Ahh doom 3 I loved that game. When you play on veteran mode it gets more difficult. Enemies are harder to kill and you have less ammo. Enemies do a lot of damage. The trick is to use each gun depending on the enemies. for example, Dont even use the shotgun on zombies, use the pistol and aim for the head. Save shotgun ammo as an imp killer and for zombie mutated marines. normal mode was pretty easy though.

^ Doom 3 really is a great experience on the higher difficulty levels.

Use the pistol on the zombies, save the other ammo for other enemies.

I think that's actually part of why I get so frustrated with today's shooters. I can still vividly recall many a sleepless night playing the original Wolfenstein 3d. Back then, all you had to do was point and shoot. You couldn't use the environment to your advantage. These days, pretty much anything is usable, but I still play as if I were playing Wolfenstein all over again. I never think to try and utilize the environment, because I'm too used to it all being static.

There was one point in which a bridge I needed to cross was blown up as part of a scripted event, followed by the disembodied maniacal laughter of some UAC rep gone nuts. Upon reaching the bridge, I realized I was going to have to backtrack to find a way around it. No, thanks. Hello, NoClip!

I love this genre. I especially love that I finally have the hardware to play next-gen games. But I've got way better things to do than to spend an afternoon solving some puzzle. So don't give me any. Fuel barrels are good, but they'll never be used. And please don't make me hunt for some access key I need to unlock some door. Just leave the door unlocked, give me a target to shoot at, and I'm happy. Anything else basically kills the fast-paced flow of the game.

I've finally left Hell, and now have to find a replacement part of a door I need unlocked. Grrrr....

Again, I just don't think that way. As long as I have ammo for it, I will always use the biggest gun in my arsenal against anything, no matter how small, just because the overkill is too damn funny.

I know the part about the blown-up bridge. You loose a lot of excitement, if you "ghost" across the bridge! Cuts about an hour out of the game.
Use of the Soul Cube is your most powerful weapon, which drains the sprits of those you aim for. Some of those creatures have a way of warding off firepower.. and the Cube takes out their life entirely. Gone for good.
You have to pick up all the PDAs you find enroute, to gain combos to lockers and offices.. plus passkeys. Some of the PDAs you pick up early don't come into use until later in the game.

Reading Ed's review of Prey has inspired me to stop cheating in my own games. I re-installed the game to rid myself of the flashlight mod I downloaded for it, and am starting from scratch, playing as the developers had originally intended the game to be played.

I'm starting off on Recruit to give myself a chance to really enjoy the game. I'd like to think the game has some replay value as you increase the difficulty, so I'm planning on doing that as well, after my first run through it.

I'm already enjoying, once again, the anxiety I felt when I first started playing it, before I began cheating. I even found myself smiling, several times, whenever I successfully dodged a fireball or a shotgun blast. And actually switching between the shotgun and pistol, depending on the enemy I'm up against, is actually proving quite a rewarding learning experience.

I've made it back to Command HQ without dying once.

Hey, good for you, Nyghtfall. Cheating should be reserved for those rare "totally frustrated, hopelessly stuck, and really pissed" situations; otherwise, you are just doing yourself out of the pleasure of finally wasting those onery bastards. Heh, heh. I've spent days, before, trying to get past particularly hard spots in games, usually boss battles. When I do finally prevail, however, I really feel like I've done something

I'm even hesitant about using walkthroughs, and I wait until I've given it a decent amount of time and effort before I resort to them. Personally, I find creative cursing helpful, and, as I mentioned in another post a while back, I once pounded the desktop so hard in frustration that my computer re-booted. Ha!

Keep us posted on your trip through Doom 3, this time. With all this talk, I may even give it another go, myself. Tonight I start Extraction Point, and I've ordered Delta Force-Xtreme for after that, but then I might take a break and replay Doom 3. Edward.

One very bad factor about 'cheats' is when you "give all" and wind up with about 5x the normal max of ammo.. you have to blast off most of the ammo, before you can pick up any more.. which could lead to loss of gameplay.
I don't care to use the 'cheats' when playing.. but sometimes I become frustrated with life's happenings, and I vent my anger in the virtual world of gaming.. I then feel satiated and at peace with the world.
In RTCW, you get the Sniperscope.. but very limited ammo. Some scenes have heavy fog, and you cannot aim normally. But the Sniperscope blasts through the fog, giving a great view of distant enemies.. and when you max out your ammo, you have 999 shots to peel off.. they never knew what was coming!!
Yet once you have played every level of a game repeatedly, you look toward new ways to rekindle interest in it.. and the 'degreeless' mode is about as far as you should go.. pick up your ammo and other goodies along the way. Give the enemy a 'sporting' chance, eh?
