I was looking at the specs of the ps3, and I came across this...
Its runned by a nVIDIA 256 GDDR3 Graphics, Exact same as my PC
5.1 sound, My PC has 7.1
256 GDDR3 Ram, My PC has 2 gigs
60 Gig HD, My PC 250 gigs
Higest res: 1080, My PC 1050p

See, ITs just a PC, Exept worst.

Yeah, except when you compare what they can do on a console verses what they can do on a PC it pulls the two much closer together. Can you imagine running PS1 games on a 33MHz PC? Doubt it, but that is what the PS1 ran. Or look at the games on the original XBox, Ninja Gaiden looked fabulous, especially for running on a 733MHz mobile celeron processor with 64MB of RAM. Try doing that with a PC.

Yes but also keep in mind that those games were running at 640x480 for the most part, a resolution that pretty much is no longer existent in the PC world. That doesn't account for everything because a 733mhz mobile celeron still wouldn't be able to run Doom 3 as well as the xbox did at 640x480.

Don't make me pull out my catch-all Carmack quote about how much the PS3 sucks when compared to a moden-day PC...

This would be about Febuary of this year, so keep that in mind when he talks about "high-end" PCs.

"The difference between theoretical performance and real-world performance on the CPU level is growing fast. On, say, a regular Xbox, you can get very large fractions of theoretical performance with not a whole lot of effort. The PlayStation 2 was always a mess with the multiple processors on there, but the new generations, with Cell or the Xbox 360, make it much, much worse. They can quote these incredibly high numbers of giga-flops or tera-flops or whatever, but in reality, when you do a straightforward development process on them, they’re significantly slower than a modern high-end PC." The point I was trying to make is that you cannot directly compare specs between the two and infer that one is greater then the other. Consoles take less processing power to get equal results.

Was at IBM about a month ago, I'm sure most of you guys are familiar with the program Terragen, it generates high quality landscapes from info that you give it.
High end computers doing one screen: about 30 seconds.
The cell proc: about 30 frames per second doing a nice video through mountains.

Look at FF9, early PS2 game versus FF12 which is quite recent. Absolute beauty and what are the system specs? much less than your PC.
Consoles are better than computers because they don't have to run all that crap in the background and programmers know the system instead of choosing generic things that run generally well on a general system that everyone else has there own (in)compatibility with.

And for anyone interested, the highly wonderous PS2 system specs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2#Technical_specifications
4MB of video RAM anyone?

As much as I prefer PC gaming over consoles, I do feel compelled to concede at least one advantage consoles have over PCs...

Console gaming boards are never flooded with posts asking, "Will this game run on my system?"

 Very true. And honestly, that is a HUGE benefit.

In other news, PS2 emulation is progressing quite nicely with some games running up to 30FPS. A surprising feat for console which features alot of cores.

will my original Xbox look like crap on my 42" Plasma 1024x768 720p TV? :)

No, I had my original XBox hooked up to my 55" 1080i CRT TV and it looked fantastic, even in 480p mode. Much much better then the PS1, which I miss.

That's because the most of the flaws are hidden by analog TV sets.

I never heard of a 4:3 plasma TV. Could ya post the model number so I can check it out?

High-End PCs > Current-Gen Consoles

Let's talk when DX10 goes full power with Crysis, Alan Wake, Hellgate London, & Unreal Tournament 2007.

Fan boys should not apply for this thread.

Sorry bub. The cell on the Ps3 is nowhere near a 3200 Athlon 64 and the Nvidia RSX is a GeForce 7800. It doesn't have unfied shaders like Xenos(Xbox360) and 8800. It can't do HDR and AA at the same time as well.

For all the hype about the PS3 and the fact that it ought to be a much more efficient gaming machine than a current PC, the launch games look dissapointing.

Usually a new console at least looks better than current PC games but I am not seeing that leap in the new consoles. Honestly, in a year or two when dx. 9 is default and dx. 10 is becoming more prominent, the new consoles are going to fall way behind.

I was looking at a farcry game on the wii and realized it doesnt even compare to farcry PC which was released a long time ago.
