Intel, world's largest chip maker, and Proxim, a leader in wireless products, has teamed up to produce WiMAX products for fixed and portable wireless broadband internet access.
Both companies reported that they will work with each other to produce base stations for corporate businesses and service providers who are looking to provide broad reach access to consumers. The products are expected to ship next year, 2005.
Intel and Proxim will also work together to create portable wireless base stations, which are expected to be out in the market in late 2005.
WiMAX, also known as 802.16, is a rapidly growing technology in the wireless data market segments. The standard can be used to transfer data at long distances.
According to Nasdaq reports, shares of Proxim rose by 34 percent to $1.49, while Intel's shares dropped by 1.4 percent to $27.74 during the mid-day.
