Intel Corp., world's largest chip maker, announced a new addition to its chipset family, code-named Grantsdale. The high-end chipset will have support for advanced graphics and high-quality audio capabilities.

According to Intel, Grantsdale is a first major chipset upgrade in the past 10 years. The high-end chipset will be sold with Intel's fastest Pentium 4 microprocessors.

80 percent of world's personal computers use Intel's integrated circuits. The chip giant's investors are proud of its accomplishements thus far. The investors also has high hopes for the new chipset, Grantsdale and stated that enhanced graphics, low power use, and wireless internet capabilities are more important to consumers than clock speeds.

Intel's Centrino chipset, designed for the mobile platform, was launched last year around the same time frame as Grantsdale. Intel's Centrino chipset features wireless internet capabilities and when combined with the highly efficient Pentium M chips boosts the performance of the notebook computer significantly. The Pentium M processors operate at much lower clock speeds than the desktop counterparts.

According to online reports, Intel is not innovating new chips as fast under the direction of CEO Craig Barrett as it used to. It took the chip maker 14 months (August 2001 - November 2002) to reach 3 GHz speeds from the 2 GHz milestone. An additional 19 months were taken to add additional 600 MHz to the new processors.
