(Playing Episode One) What can I say? She opens doors, hacks computers, gives advice, worrys about me, and she's a damned fine shot, too. What a girl! I think she might be the best NPC I've ever met.

Through it all, she remains a "good girl," and feminine, and, when I accidentally shine my flashlight in her eyes, and she flinches and puts her hands up, I feel like apologizing. Heh, heh. She's even funny. Did anybody catch her comment about "Zombines"?

I know it's a short game, so I'm kinda pacing myself, and just doing an hour or so, every evening. I got to the first boss battle in a hurry, though, and when I screwed up and got my very first "Alyx has died" message, I was devastated. lol I really felt like I had let her down, so I've become more protective. I won't spoil, but, working together, we figured out the process and licked the Ant Lions; and now we're just hanging out in the hallway, catching our breath. Kinda nice, actually. "Alone time," you know? Heh, heh.

Before I'm done, I'll try to find something to complain about to avoid a fanboy stamp; but, so far, this little episode is a shooter's delicacy, in my opinion. I like everything about it, and, even though it will be a small portion, I suspect it will satisfy in a way only quality can. Edward.

Yeah, Episode one is a great game. I couldn't stop playing untill I finished it. Playing alongside Alyx is a nice new feature Valve has implemented into this episode and I hope to see something similar in later episodes. One thing that always made me smile were some of the little comments she makes (try picking up an out of order phone...) I did actually wonder if Alyx could die and thought about attempting the game again without killing anyone and just letting her do all the blasting but after her untimely demise in your efforts Oldster I see she can die. Still I might still try and see how long either of us survive :p:

I have played for a total of 2 hours, and haven't played it for about a week. I just can't be bothered to play it.... although it's an alright game.

Sounds like you're having a great time with H-L 2: E1 Edward. Glad to hear it and I know what you mean about making a special connection with a NPC in a good game.

I loved old Barney in H-L 1 and especially loved getting a chance to play as him in the second EP Blue Shift. I also felt close to / protective of too many RPG party companions to list and in several squad-based third person action titles over the years. Shucks, I even fell for hard-as-nails femme fatale assassin Mona Sax in Max Payne 2 before I knew she was going to wind up being a decent human being after all.

In various PC adventures I have had a real kinship with loveable sidekicks like Glottis in Tim Schafer's brilliant Grim Fandango, Grace Nakimura in Jane Jensen's wonderful Gabriel Knight trilogy, and more recently Oscar the automaton in Syberia 1 & 2. I really liked the companions in Beyond Good & Evil too.

IMO, these memorable NPCs often make the difference between a good game and a great one.

Cheers, Terry

Heh, heh, heh. Yeah, I haven't thought of Glottis in years, but he was certainly memorable, wasn't he? He is the undisputed owner of "VROOOOM! VROOOOM!" Edward.
