"Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved," said Gabe Newell, Valve's CEO. "It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime."

Gamers kick butt !! :face10:

So I guess that they found the thieves a long time ago, but had to do a great deal of work to bring charges against the people in various countries, hence the much delayed arrests.

Just out of curiosity, has Vivendi given a release date OTHER than "sometime in 2004" yet ??

Maybe it wasn't a hoax after all.

It's all a plot to cover up Valve's lack of progress!

I think the release date is somewhere around the 13th of July, if I remember correctly. I'll try to find the site again where I saw it and post it later.

I the time that it was originally slated for release, to now, they could have used very simliar graphics, the same engine, and made a totally different game.

IF HL2 ends up released with similar drawbacks as we saw with DX2:IW (over-hyped/unimpressive compared to first), I seriously wouldn't want to be in Gabe's shoes.

They've had more than enough time to fix bugs, improve ALL of the graphics, tweak the AI, fine-tune the interface, sharpen the maps and storyline, and easily add 40% more content.

I don't know exactly what Valve is promising with this game, but they've certainly had plenty of time to make it more grand than it was originally intended to be. So as far as I'm concerned the question will be "Did Vavle use the extra many months to make HL2 greater than it was, or did they just change some code and shelve it, in virtually unimproved condition, until it actually is released ??"

Merged threads and redirected to general gaming. HL2 is scheduled to eventually be released on console also, hence the moving to general gaming.

Im hoping HL2 is going to be a jaw droppingly great game. Like the original im hoping it is quite long and has great replayability. Valve has had a loong time to improve the game, as Gaim pointed out.. so im hoping they have. Any idea when they'll release it? Didn't they last say September of this year? If not, it'll either be Christmas time or next year.

All right, just did a google search for Half Life 2 release date, and found out that there's more release dates for this game than I had thought. According to Gamestop.com, and ebgames.com, the release date is 9/1/2004. A couple of other sites list the release date for summer 2004, some say it's not going to be until early 2005, and Best buy has a release date of 8/26/2004. So we'll just have to wait and see........
