patches are almost ALWAYS installed through a patcher. Mods and maps on the other hand have to be put into their own directories. They always come zipped up and most of the time they have a readme file which tells you where to put the files too =]

A lot of them you will have to place files in the game directory, usuaully the readme will tell you where to put them. Most patches are a *.exe file (executable) and those are the ones that will install automatically. But as you say, many mods and maps will be in a *.zip folder and you need to extract them and then take the files and put them in the proper part of your game directory (different all the time, consult the readme).

It would be easy if we knew which game/s you had the maps and mods for. Different games have different ways of installing maps and mods. Some you have *.exe files where it automatically installs them, some games you have to manually unzip the files and other games use other techniques like by downloading another program called a "mod/plugin installer" which you use to install mods/plugins.
