i got half life 2 episode one the other day from steam.now when i try and play it, it gets to the start where it has the picture that is blurry (the citadel) but then exits and says there is an error and *the memory could not be read* thats sorta what it says it also has some numbers which i think start with a x. Could somone please help i really wanna get on and play this game

If you right click on episode 1( in steam), go into properties and you can change the launch options. Enter the command -dxlevel xx, where xx= the dx level. For example, try -dxlevel 70 for dx. 7 and see if that works.

do you type that in where it says set launch options?

also when i try and back up the game files it says that you cant back them up untill it has finished updating. Although the games says it is ready.

Yeah, type it in where it says launch options.

Also, you might be low on virtual memory, is your harddrive full or almost full? If it is you should delete some files.

If none of this works you might want to try "validating the games files" or re-downloading episode 1.

i have about 20gb left on the hdd that steam is on is that low?

No that is plenty of space, you just need enough to cover file swapping. I would try to reinstall the game at this point if nothing else has worked. Also, I assumed your computer has updated drivers and is virus free. You should check those things as well.
