Okay, so it's speculation, but I'd like to hear what all the Diablo fans out there think of the next game: should it be a standard, top down 2D (or at least 2D perspective) dungeon crawl, or an immersive 3D game?

===================================

Personally, I was firmly on the 2D/topdown side of this argument -- before I played through Oblivion's first level in the plane of Oblivion. I could have sworn I had stumbled across a rummage sale from DII's artwork -- and it worked. The spikes dripping with blood, demonic sky, the whole atmosphere... it almost seemed like Bethesda should have paid Blizzard royalties. :wtf: But, my point is that it made D3 in 3D a possibility for me. :): I think a first-person, 3D Diablo would probably be immensly entertaining. Perhaps not as good as a top-down one, but just the same I'd like to see it.

What do you think?

I think it should be isometric 3D. It should have a much better system of randomizing areas like they are doing in hellgate london. I think the game should have realtime lighting and all of the modern graphical techniques. Titan's quest looks better than any 2d game I have seen to be honest.

I dont really like 2d background with 3d models like in Sacred, it just looks weird.

I voted 3D but isometric overhead view like in the updoming Titan Quest. That game looks great, especially for an over head game.

Isometric 3D. Looks much better than 2D, has more possibilities and is better supported by modern gaphics cards. I don't think there's any game going to be released as a 2D game unless the developpers absolutely didn't have the means of creating or buying a 3D engine.

.

Modern 3D all the way ala' Neverwinter Nights but with even better DX10 graphics plus better integrated, scaling surround sound, more advanced physics and smarter AI.

Pure 2D was great in its day and still is for Tetris clones, Solitaire and simple Flash games. But we have moved on and new RPGs need to reflect the many improvements that have since been made to our digital tools and technology.

Cheers, Terry

I like the look of the last generation of 2D games, but realisticaly I know that 3D offers a lot more possibilites.

Of course it has to be 3D... otherwise we won't be covering it. :shades: :joker:

I think 2d games could be equally as stunning as 3d, but to be done right can take much more time, effort, and talent. More time on art would make for less time spent on gameplay, or lengthier development times though. Not too many 2d games had alot of time spent drawing extra frames for every character and moving environments so they moved more fluidly and could react more dynamicly to each other.

Id be pretty surprised if Diablo 3 wasn't 3d since most all development tools and hardware are geared towards it these days. If its not isometric, well then they are just messing with the Diablo formula.

I'd like to see it as a 3rd person action game, like HERETIC 2 was. But that's just me.

That would be neat but I do not think it would work within the confines of diablo because so much loot is dropped all the time. It would be awkward to have to aim and click on it constantly.

Still, it would be neat if you went into third person for melee combat, first person for a ranged character and isometric if you use spells.

and 3rd person would let you really get a look at your armor too.

Basically it would be a much more action oriented Oblivion.........which may not be good.........
