View Full Version : Games that deserve a sequel

It seems like nearly every new game is either a sequel or part of an established franchise. It's understandable, establishing a new intellectual property can be a huge financial risk. However, some of these original titles are amongst the best out there. This is why today we honor those shining stars that stood alone, never to become part of an established franchise in our list of the top games we think deserve a sequel. To keep things simple, we narrowed it down to games that never saw a sequel, or a prequel, in any form. We've even included suggested titles for the sequels that we think will give the games that extra something to ensure they sell.

What games would you add to this list?

Grim Fandango was on the list, but I just want to second it.

Diablo 3 is my most anticipated sequel not yet announced. However, I expect that to eventually happen. The game I wish had a sequel that I am sure would never see the light of day would be Anachronox.

I'd have to second Beyond Good and Evil and Starcraft.

Rob, I also have to agree with you on Anachronox. That game was awesome, like an "American" Japanese RPG. The story was really good, the main character was dumb as a sack of hammers, yet still likeable, and the combat and graphics were top-notch.

The only other game I've really been chomping for a sequel was The Longest Journey and well, we have one now. :):

Mechwarrior - I'm wishing for a Mech5 that goes back to being a sim and not an action game.

Planescape Torment definitely!

Wasn't there a sequel for Beyond Good and Evil in the works? I vaguely seem to remember reading something about it. IIRC they were going to start on it after they had finished the King Kong game.

Starwars Galaxies 2, done by somebody who has a vision and sticks to it and produces content in a timely manner.

It's still a rumor but I hope it is all true.

i dont think anyone should be allowed to make a sequel untill starcraft 2 comes out. if SC2 comes out and doesnt live up to the hype they should be required to remake it.

No, PC Gamer confirmed that it was just a rumor... SOE is keeping the liscense, and Bioware was never working or was planning on working on a sequal

Bioware is working on the idea and the production of a StarWars based MMO, but it's not a final thing, the work on what they need, what the game could be like, what they could do to make it different than SWG, that part in in fact being worked on.

As for sequels..........
SystemShock 3
Freespace 3
Crusader 3
XIII part 2
a real Red Faction sequel
Oni 2
SHOGO 2
Max PAyne 3
a new Heretic game, but make it work as 1st or 3rd person. Bring back the glory days of it's FPS style, but the better functionality of it's 3rd person style.
Mafia. there was a sequel being planned, but the departure of a few key players at illusion softworks stopped the games dev. they then went and focused on H&D2.
Diablo 3
A Star Trek: Elite Force game, but set in TNG setting, not Voyager.

Also forgot. Bring back Descent. Running on my machine and if I could get decent 3D glasses I could show how to properly hurl your lunch from vertigo

Descent 2 is the only game I have ever played that made me physically sick with motion sickness. I have never before or since experienced motion sickness from anything else. Fire up Descent 2 though, and I am out of it for hours.

Hehe, I can see how that would happen. Still, I want Descent 4!

One more that I can think of is Terminal Velocity.

Total Annihilation (really, in what other game can you have build mazes with your defensive towers and leave several screen's worth of twisted metal corpses?). Although Chris Taylor is apparently developing a 'spiritual sequal' going by the name of supreme commander.

I-war 2. This and baldurs gate 2 are contenders for my 'best game ever' award. The difficulty is a little high until you get used to the controls but once you do you'll be screaming at other space game developers to use the I-was 2 control system. An excellent flight system combined with an impressive story and some memorable lines ('If you were half as smart as you thought you were...' 'Get us some nice and juicy cargo' 'You can collect a zoo if you want to cal, but I'm not cleaning out the damn cargo bay') are the reasons it's one of my favourite games. Oh, and did I mention it had proper spaceship design and beautiful backgrounds?
